Federico Masini, born in Rome in 1960. In 1981 attended an Intensive Chinese Summer Course of Chinese Language at the University of California, Berkeley. In 1986 graduated in Philosophy, Department of Linguistics, University of Rome "la Sapienza", with mark 110/110 cum laude, discussing a thesis on "The Predicative Structures in Modern Chinese", tutor: Prof. Tullio De Mauro. From 1983 to 1986, thanks to a Scholarship form the Chinese Government, attended courses of Chinese language at the Beijing Language Institute and at the Department of Chinese of the University of Beijing. From 1987 to 1989 is Press-attaché at the Italian Embassy in Beijing. In 1992 Ph.D in Oriental Studies, dissertation on "The Formation of Modern Chinese Lexicon and its Evolution toward a National Language: The Period from 1840 to 1898”. 1993-97 Assistant Professor of Chinese Philology at the Faculty of Letters and Philosophy of the University of Rome "La Sapienza”. 1997-2000 Associate Professor of Chinese Philology in the same institution. From 2000 Full professor of Chinese Language and Literature at the Faculty of Letters and Philosophy of the University of Rome "La Sapienza”. From 2001 to 2010 has been Dean of the Faculty of Oriental Studies at the same University.

From Septembe 2006 is Director of the Confucius Institute at Sapienza University of Rome.

From November 2010 to October 2014 has been Vice Rector for Academic Affairs at Sapienza University of Rome.

From December 1st, 2017 to December 1st, 2020, has been Director of the Language Center at Sapienza University of Rome. (CLA).

Has been member of the Board of the European Association of Chinese Linguistics, European representative in the Board of the International Association of Chinese Lingusitics and member of the board of the Italian National Commission for Translation Awards of the Ministero dei Beni Culturali.

On October 6, 2010 has been honoured the award for «Sino-Italian Friendship» by H.E. Mr Wen Jiabao, Prime Minister of the PRC.

On August 28, 2014 has been honoured «The 8th Special Book Award of China», by Ms Liu Yandong, Vice Prime Minister of PRC.

On November 17th, 2015 has been honoured the award «China Italy Science Technology Innovation Cooperation Contribution Award» at the presence of the Italian Minister of Miur and of the Chinese Minister of Science and Technology.
